Thank you!!!

Posted Friday, May 11th, 2012 by Ms. Bushman

On behalf of all of us at Stevenson, we would like to thank the PTA and the entire Stevenson community for your kind words and generosity throughout Teacher Appreciation Week. Your thoughtfulness was much appreciated and made this week very memorable. The gold medals with student letters, the luncheon, the generous gifts, and sweet treats and flowers made this week extra special. We feel so fortunate to be able to work with such caring, supportive families. Thanks again!

Week of the Young Child

Posted Wednesday, May 9th, 2012 by Ms. Bushman

Early Childhood and Kindergarten celebrated Week of the Young Child with many fun-filled activities!  We kicked off our
week celebration by painting handprints in our school doorways representing children, families, and all who have dedicated their lives to providing a quality learning environment.  We celebrated with a special activity each day – hat day, crazy hair day, bring your favorite stuffed animal day, and pajama day!  We were also very fortunate in Early Childhood to have special guest readers in our classrooms.  Thank you to Mr. Jay Magdealeno, Dr. Naddeo, and our own principal Dr. Clifford for taking time out of their schedules to read to us.  The celebrations ended on a great note!  Kindergarten attended a fun-filled field trip and Early Childhood had their culminating event at the Sports Center for all the Early Childhood Families in our District!

News from Mrs. Cox: Jump for Heart and Field Day

Posted Monday, April 30th, 2012 by Ms. Bushman

Congratulations to all the students in grades 1-6 for participating in our Jump For Heart event. As a school we raised over $1,800.00
for the American Heart Association!!! Thank-you everyone that brought in  donations! It was fun to see some parents in PE class jumping rope.

Our next big event will be Field Day on May 30th. We need many volunteers to help out on this day. It has  been a tradition at Stevenson for the parents to work the stations. The students really enjoy this! The day begins at 9:30 and will end around 2pm. Please email
BarbaraCox@sd54.org if you can help out on this day.

Another successful Celebrate Reading and Writing!

Posted Thursday, April 26th, 2012 by Ms. Bushman

Stevenson students were able to share books that they had written as well as read their classmate’s writing during Celebrate Reading and Writing. Students enjoyed listening to a story teller and participated in a Wild About Reading scavenger hunt to receive reading incentives. The hallways were decorated with animal print signs and green tablecloths. Thanks to all those who supported our students’ writing during this event.

Beanie babies collection

The 6th grade girl scout troop visited and worked at Yellow Ribbon Support Group a few weeks ago. While they were there, they saw great care packages that are sent to soldiers overseas. The car packages included snacks, socks, personal hygiene items, batteries, letters from home, and Girl Scout cookies. One of the items included in each care package was a beanie baby to be given to a local child.

If you have beanie babies that you’d like to donate (or any other items on the list below), please drop them off in the collection box in the school office. We will be collecting items until May 18th!

-Pocket-size Kleenex
-AAA and AA batteries
-Small tubes of sunscreen
-Lip balm
-Cans of beef snack sticks (Walmart or Aldi)
-Tuna salad with crackers by Brunswick (a convenient meal)

Stevenson alumn and author speaks with students!

Posted Wednesday, April 11th, 2012 by Ms. Bushman

Reina M., a student at Conant High School, visited Stevenson on Monday to talk about writing and becoming a published author. Reina, who attended Stevenson, shared her inspiration when writing, how she develops ideas, and what she learned at Stevenson to help her publish a book. Students were able to hear about the process in creating a novel as well as how it becomes published. Reina did a fantastic job relating her work to our students. The kids loved browsing through the many writing samples she brought with her, including her first grade journal from when she was in Mrs. Riley’s room! Thanks, Reina, for coming to see us!

Orchestra assembly

Posted Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012 by Ms. Bushman

Today’s orchestra assembly gave students the opportunity to hear wonderful music as well as see their own classmates perform! We were very lucky to have the Mead Junior High Orchestra join us for an assembly with some of our 5th and 6th graders. All the students did a fantastic job entertaining the crowd!
