Dear Stevenson Community,

“Thank You” does not seem sufficient when considering all of the special things the Stevenson community did to show their appreciation for the staff last week. We are truly grateful for all of the yummy treats, special notes and the amazing lunch. Thank you to the PTA for organizing this very special week for all of us.

Please join us for our last PTA meeting Tuesday, at 7:00 pm in the staff lounge.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,
Maria Clifford

On behalf of all of us at Stevenson, we would like to thank the PTA and the entire Stevenson community for your kind words and generosity throughout Teacher Appreciation Week. Your thoughtfulness was much appreciated and made this week very memorable. The gold medals with student letters, the luncheon, the generous gifts, and sweet treats and flowers made this week extra special. We feel so fortunate to be able to work with such caring, supportive families. Thanks again!

Week of the Young Child

Posted Wednesday, May 9th, 2012 by Ms. Bushman

Early Childhood and Kindergarten celebrated Week of the Young Child with many fun-filled activities!  We kicked off our
week celebration by painting handprints in our school doorways representing children, families, and all who have dedicated their lives to providing a quality learning environment.  We celebrated with a special activity each day – hat day, crazy hair day, bring your favorite stuffed animal day, and pajama day!  We were also very fortunate in Early Childhood to have special guest readers in our classrooms.  Thank you to Mr. Jay Magdealeno, Dr. Naddeo, and our own principal Dr. Clifford for taking time out of their schedules to read to us.  The celebrations ended on a great note!  Kindergarten attended a fun-filled field trip and Early Childhood had their culminating event at the Sports Center for all the Early Childhood Families in our District!

News from Mrs. Cox: Jump for Heart and Field Day

Posted Monday, April 30th, 2012 by Ms. Bushman

Congratulations to all the students in grades 1-6 for participating in our Jump For Heart event. As a school we raised over $1,800.00
for the American Heart Association!!! Thank-you everyone that brought in  donations! It was fun to see some parents in PE class jumping rope.

Our next big event will be Field Day on May 30th. We need many volunteers to help out on this day. It has  been a tradition at Stevenson for the parents to work the stations. The students really enjoy this! The day begins at 9:30 and will end around 2pm. Please email
BarbaraCox@sd54.org if you can help out on this day.

Dear Stevenson Community,

It was great to see the many families that turned out for our Science Fair and  Celebrate Reading and Writing Night. Your children love to share their great work. Those families that were unable to attend, your child’s classroom teacher has your author ribbon.

You may have noticed the colorful handprints on our front doors this last week. The hands are the works of our early childhood and kindergarten students as we celebrated The Week of the Young Child. The students enjoyed a fun-filled week starting off with crazy
hair day, pajama day, hat day and bring your favorite stuffed animal to school. On Friday, early childhood families and teachers spent the day at the Schaumburg Sports Complex enjoying family activities.

As you know, we started our spring MAP testing last week.  The children have been working so hard this year and we are confident you will see much growth from your child’s Fall RIT score.  Please make sure that your child has a good breakfast and gets plenty of rest.  It would also be helpful to just let them know to make sure he/she takes his/her time on the test and reads carefully.  In the past, we have found children who rush through the test tend to be unable to show us what they truly know.  We will be sending home the results as soon as they become available.

Each school year, District 54 schools reevaluate goals to ensure we are best meeting our students’ needs and providing the best services. Throughout this past year, we have had many successes with our multiage program at Stevenson School. Classroom teachers have
multiple opportunities throughout the week for team time to plan and work together to maximize student learning. All staff members that service each grade level meet weekly to ensure we are meeting all of the students’ need including students who need extra support to students who would benefit from enrichment as they are working at or above grade level. We are so fortunate to have so many knowledgeable staff members that work together on a team. As we move into next year, multiage will continue at Stevenson School. In our multiage configuration, students who are currently in 1st, 3rd and 5th grade will be staying with their current teacher for another school year, while students in grade 2 & 4 will move on to the next grade level with a new teacher. If you have any questions about this configuration, please contact me so I can clarify any information for you.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our Spring Fling and Silent Auction on Friday, May 4. So many volunteers have made this a wonderful event. Please note that for the safety of all our children parents need to accompany their children to this event. We appreciate your support!

Have a wonderful week!

Maria Clifford

Another successful Celebrate Reading and Writing!

Posted Thursday, April 26th, 2012 by Ms. Bushman

Stevenson students were able to share books that they had written as well as read their classmate’s writing during Celebrate Reading and Writing. Students enjoyed listening to a story teller and participated in a Wild About Reading scavenger hunt to receive reading incentives. The hallways were decorated with animal print signs and green tablecloths. Thanks to all those who supported our students’ writing during this event.

Beanie babies collection

Posted Wednesday, April 25th, 2012 by Ms. Bushman

The 6th grade girl scout troop visited and worked at Yellow Ribbon Support Group a few weeks ago. While they were there, they saw great care packages that are sent to soldiers overseas. The car packages included snacks, socks, personal hygiene items, batteries, letters from home, and Girl Scout cookies. One of the items included in each care package was a beanie baby to be given to a local child.

If you have beanie babies that you’d like to donate (or any other items on the list below), please drop them off in the collection box in the school office. We will be collecting items until May 18th!

-Small tubes of sunscreen
-Lip balm
-Cans of beef snack sticks (Walmart or Aldi)
